• Most of the characters in this series were written with specific actors in mind.
The names of the characters are often taken from the names of the characters played by the cast.

Yvet's real name is Zhang Yue(章月). Imaginary Cast is Zhang Ziyi(章子怡). However, the name of this character is taken from the name of the former special forces member played by Maggie Q in “Dragon Squad(猛龍)”.

Like the red spider lily, which has many names, she also has many names. One of them is “Lily”, her stage name.

  • The restaurant where Francis proposes at the beginning of the remastered version is based on a real restaurant in Hong Kong called Malaysian Chinese Restaurant(馬華餐廳), and its interior design was used as a reference.

This restaurant was used as a location for the film “Throw Down(柔道龍虎榜)”, directed by Johnnie To(杜琪峯). Unfortunately, it closed in 2024.

  • Amaryllis, like Lycoris, is another name for the red spider lily. The club run by the Red Flower Society is named after red flowers, and the hostesses who work there often have stage names derived from the English names of flowers.

  • The Red Flower Society(紅花會) is a name that appears in Jin Yong(金庸)'s martial arts novel “The Book and the Sword(書剣恩仇録)”. I was looking for the name of a secret society related to flowers, and this is what I came up with.

  • The song Rose sang is envisioned as Linda Wong(王馨平)'s “Don't Ask Me Who I Am(別問我是誰)”, the one Jimmy (Shawn Yue(余文樂)) sang in “Love in the Buff(春嬌與志明)”.

  • The song Lily sang is envisioned as Tsai Chin(蔡琴)'s “The Forgotten Time(被遺忘的時光)”, the one that plays in the audio shop in “Infernal Affairs(無間道)”.

  • Rose's Imaginary Cast is Dada Chan(陳靜). It's an image of a cute character from “Vulgaria(低俗喜劇)”.

  • The Ghost's childhood friend, the doctor, is envisioned as having a cameo by Daniel Wu(呉彦祖). The idea came from his cameo appearance as a doctor in “Chinese Zodiac(十二生肖)”.

In fact, he is also acquainted with Lycoris and appears again after Red Spider 2.

  • The hot pot restaurant where the executives of the Red Flower Society gathered was modeled after the interior of a real hot pot restaurant in Hong Kong called Hung Fuk Seafood Restaurant(鴻福海鮮四季火鍋).

The situation in which the leader of an organisation is murdered and the executives who attempt to rebel are controlled with a single phone call is quoted from “Infernal Affairs II(無間道II)”. This scene was filmed at this hot pot restaurant.

Unfortunately, Hung Fuk Seafood Restaurant closed in 2022.

  • The ringtone on Big B's mobile phone is, needless to say, the theme song from ‘A Better Tomorrow(英雄本色)’.

I debated whether to use the theme song from “Throw Down(柔道龍虎榜)”, starring Tony Leung Ka-Fai(梁家輝), but I chose this one because it was easier to understand.

  • Big B's mention of the organization “The Over Heaven Society (天上會)” is a pun on “Conqueror's Clan (天下會)” from “The Storm Riders(風雲:雄霸天下)”. Though named “天上會” in Chinese/Japanese, the latter organization is seemingly translated as “Conqueror's Clan” in the English version.

This organisation actually appears in the sequel to Red Spider Anecdote: Triangle.

  • The name of the organisation mentioned by Big B, “The Hung Hing Society(洪興社)” , is the name of an organisation that appears in the Young and Dangerous(古惑仔) series.

  • Shrewd Lou's real name is Li Tin Ming(李添明). Imaginary Cast is Louis Koo(古天樂). The character is modelled after Jimmy from “Election(黑社會)”, but the name is taken from “Drug War(毒戰)”. The surname Li in his real name comes from Jimmy's real name, Li Ka Yuen(李家源).

  • Big B does not have a real name. The Imaginary Cast is Tony Leung Ka-Fai(梁家輝). The role is modelled on Big D from “Election(黑社會)”. However, the name is not exactly the same, as the alphabet was taken from Inspector B, played by Lam Ka Tung(林家棟)in “Infernal Affairs(無間道)”.

  • Boss Ting's real name is Ting Man Po(丁文寶). Imaginary Cast is Dick Liu Kai-chi(廖啓智). The surname is taken from the role name in “The Bullet Vanishes(消失的子彈)”, and the first name is taken from the role name in “Lady Cop & Papa Crook(大搜查之女)”.

‘老闆’ is a term meaning ‘boss.’ He is called that by the cast of the show club NASA he manages, and as a result, he is also called that by the other members. His character, who is ruthless yet loyal to the organisation, is inspired by the role of Uncle John(倪雄) in “Infernal Affairs II(無間道II)”.

  • The idea that a specific item passed down from generation to generation becomes a symbol of the organisation's boss was inspired by the triad's dragonhead baton in “Election(黑社會)”.

  • Lau Ming Wa's Imaginary Cast is Andy Lau(劉徳華). The role name is from “Cold War(寒戰)”.

He is an actor whose charm doubles when he plays a villain, so we have cast him as a villain.

  • Fatso's Imaginary Cast is Suet Lam. The character name comes from “PTU”. Since the basic setting for this work was “The Mission(鎗火)”, he was originally a member of the escort team, and we had considered a route for him, but it was changed to Dog Head's route, and Fatso's character setting was also changed.

  • The tea restaurant where Fatso and Lai are talking is based on the interior of a real café in Hong Kong called ‘China Cafe(中國冰室)’.

This restaurant was used as a location for the film “PTU”, directed by Johnnie To(杜琪峯). Unfortunately, it closed in 2019.

  • The Cream Soda with Milk that Fatso is drinking at China Cafe(中國冰室) is a unique drink originating in Hong Kong, made by mixing cream soda and milk.

Although it does not appear on the China Cafe menu, we have included it as a typical Hong Kong drink.

  • Inspector Leung's Imaginary Cast is Tony Leung(梁朝偉). The character name (last name) is taken from the cast member's name. He will be active after “Red Spider Anecdote: Triangle”.

  • Inspector Tsui's Imaginary Cast is Wu Tingye(吳廷燁). The role name is from “Interpol(國際刑警1997)”.

  • The interior design of Shrewed Lou's office is based on that of the real-life members-only restaurant, The China Club Hong Kong(中國會), in Hong Kong.

This restaurant was used as a location for the films “Infernal Affairs II(無間道II)” and “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In(九龍城寨之圍城)”.

  • Luk's full name is Luk Hau-kwok(陸孝國). Imaginary Cast is Hu Jun(胡軍).The surname Luk was taken from“Infernal Affairs II(無間道II)”.

The setting that he was once a loyal and ruthless assassin for the organization slightly reflects his character in the movie “Bodyguards and Assassins(十月圍城)”.

  • The name was inspired by the Hive in “Resident Evil”, as Lily from Red Spider was part of that organisation. The Imaginary Cast members of The Web are mainly actors from mainland China.

  • In the play, the person Yvet feels has been the only one to evoke such a feeling in her is a certain character who appears in Red Spider 2.

His existence is also mentioned in Red Spider Anecdote: The Longest Nite.

  • The scene is set at "Yee Sing Eatery(義盛小館)", where the young Luk and The Ghost are depicted eating.

This restaurant name appears in the Young and Dangerous(古惑仔) series, and the two are enjoying "煲仔飯" (Bo Zai Fan), a famous Hong Kong claypot rice dish.

  • Several episodes in the game suggest that Luk travels to Macao with Yvet. This episode is recounted in Red Spider 3.

Macao is very close to Hong Kong, taking only about an hour to reach by high-speed boat.

  • Shawn's full name is Lok Hau Yue(樂孝宇). Imaginary Cast is Shawn Yue(余文樂).The name ‘Lok’ comes from the name of an actor.

Shawn Yue doesn't seem to like playing action roles, so he became a cultural character.

  • Shawn's cross-dressing is an episode inspired by the character Jimmy, played by Shawn Yue(余文樂) in “Love in the Buff(春嬌與志明)”, who also cross-dresses.

  • The meal Shawn is enjoying in the flashback scene is char siu rice(叉燒飯), a Hong Kong soul food dish consisting of char siu pork served on top of rice.

It appears as a key item in “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In(九龍城寨之圍城)”, and the background image for this scene is based on the set used in the film.

  • The design of the masks worn by Luk and Shawn when they break through the police cordon is based on those seen in “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In(九龍城寨之圍城)”.

  • In the Shawn route's ending, the location where Shawn and Big B are holding their meeting is inspired by the interior of Jumbo Kingdom (珍寶海鮮舫), a real floating restaurant that once existed in Hong Kong. This restaurant was also a filming location for movies such as “Infernal Affairs II(無間道II)”, but unfortunately, it sank in 2022.

  • Dog Head's full name is Wong Man Chin(黃文展). Imaginary Cast is Simon Yam(任達華).

The setting of struggling with relationships with children is from “Election 2(黑社會以和為貴)”. The character name is taken from “Eye in the Sky(跟蹤)”. The full name is also from the same character.

  • Johnny's full name is Wong Yat Sing(黃日昇).I couldn't think of any major teen actors in Hong Kong cinema at the time, so Imaginary Cast is Kim Soo-hyun(김수현), who co-starred with Simon Yam(任達華) in “The Thieves(도둑들)”.

The name Yat Sing(日昇) comes from the name of the actor who plays Simon Yam's son in “Election 2(黑社會以和為貴)”.

  • In Victoria Harbour, which separates Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, inexpensive tours around the harbour by ferry are available at all times.

Yvet initially asked Shawn to book this tour, but Shawn seems to have booked the A Symphony of Lights Cruise, which is a special tour during a specific time slot.

The Symphony of Lights Cruise is a show that takes place every night from 8:00 p.m. for about 10 minutes, where the skyscrapers around Victoria Harbour are illuminated with laser beams and searchlights. Tours that operate during this time slot are very popular and tend to be more expensive.

However, it is a very beautiful show, so if you ever have the opportunity to visit Hong Kong, I highly recommend seeing it at least once.

There are several ferries that offer tours, but in this game, we have used the interior of Star Ferry as a model.

  • The scene where men cook together in a group is a common trope in Johnnie To(杜琪峯)'s films.

The pattern on the plates Fatso is arranging is called "Diva" (帝華), a design commonly used in Hong Kong cha chaan tengs and similar establishments.

  • In the Dog Head route's ending, Dog Head, Johnny, and Yvet are walking along the Avenue of Stars(星光大道), a promenade in Hong Kong adorned with handprints of Hong Kong movie stars.

The Avenue of Stars underwent renovation in 2015, but in this game, we've recreated its appearance as it was in 2014, before the renovation.

  • Lai's full name is Lai Wing Yan(來永仁). Imaginary Cast is Leon Lai(黎明).His background, as revealed in the Ghost route, is taken from Chan Wing Yan(陳永仁) of “Infernal Affairs(無間道)”, so his name, Wing Yan(永仁)is derived from Chan Wing Yan.

He was supposed to be a cold-hearted character like Yeung Kam Wing(楊錦榮) in “Infernal Affairs III(無間道III)”, but somehow he ended up being a kind-hearted character.

  • The setting where Lycoris receives instructions from Lau Kin Ming(劉劍明) at the cinema is the same method Lau Kin Ming (劉健明) used to receive instructions in “Infernal Affairs(無間道)”.

The fact that the perpetrator who attacks Francis at the beginning of the game hides a gun in a paper bag is a reference to the scene in “Infernal Affairs II(無間道II)” where Lau Kin Ming assassinates Ngai Kwun(倪坤).

  • In the scene where The Ghost tortures Lai, The Ghost is holding a tattoo machine.

The setting implies that The Ghost has mixed chili peppers into the tattoo ink, and the characters engraved on Lai's arm are "仆街" (puk gai). This is the Cantonese equivalent of the F-word, a term that frequently appears in Hong Kong noir films.

Also, the pattern on the vinyl sheet under the chair Lai is sitting on is commonly used in Hong Kong.

  • The comic book Lai is reading beside Yvet is the comic adaptation of the original novel for the movie “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In(九龍城寨之圍城)”.

  • Lau Kin Ming(劉劍明)'s Imaginary Cast is Gordon Lam(林家棟).The character name is homophonous with Lau Kin Ming (劉健明) , played by Andy Lau(劉徳華) in “Infernal Affairs(無間道)”.

  • The Ghost's real name is Wong Chi Shing(王志誠). Imaginary Cast is Anthony Wong(黃秋生)。This name is taken from the character's name in “Infernal Affairs(無間道)”.The role name ‘The Ghost’ comes from “The Mission(鎗火)”.

The fact that he usually uses a Beretta M8000 Cougar is also based on the setting in The Mission.

  • Yeung Kwun's Imaginary Cast is Eric Tsang(曾志偉).In “Infernal Affairs II(無間道II)”, Wing Hau(永孝)'s father, who is assassinated, is named Ngai Kwun(倪坤), so I used only his first name and changed his surname.

  • Roy's Imaginary Cast is Roy Cheung(張耀揚). The role and name are from “Infernal Affairs II(無間道II)”. In addition to appearing in Red Spider 2 and later, he also appears in Red Spider Anecdote: The Longest Nite.

  • Mary's full name is Tam Ka Ling(譚嘉玲). Imaginary Cast is Carina Lau Ka Ling(劉嘉玲). As a woman loved by Anthony Wong(黃秋生) and Eric Tsang(曾志偉), she is similar to Mary in “Infernal Affairs II(無間道II)”.

  • In Hong Kong, there's a tradition during grave sweeping where people burn paper effigies as offerings to the deceased. In the Ghost route's ending, The Ghost is holding a paper effigy modeled after Western liquor. This scene is set during the Double Ninth Festival (重陽節) in 2014.

  • Francis's full name is Yang Yongxiao(楊永孝). Imaginary Cast is Francis Ng(吳鎮宇).

This name is taken from the character Ngai Wing Hau(倪永孝) in “Infernal Affairs II(無間道II)”.

The character Yang Yongxiao is a Hongkonger. However, he intentionally uses the Mandarin pronunciation of his name, Yang Yongxiao, instead of the more typical Cantonese pronunciation, Yeung Wing Hau. This is to accommodate his mother, who migrated from mainland China and is not fluent in Cantonese.

  • Zhang Lei's Imaginary Cast is Sun Hong Lei(孫紅雷).This name is taken from the role name in “Drug War(毒戰)”.

There is also his main route in Red Spider 2. Please look forward to it.

  • The handle name Shawn uses on the dating app, Peter, is taken from the main character of Spider-Man, as he is a fan of the superhero.

Boss Ting's handle name, Major Tom, is taken from the song Space Oddity by David Bowie, as he is a fan of the artist.

  • Although his face does not appear in the game, the name of the person accompanying Zhang Lei as his bodyguard is Ding Xiu(丁修).

He plays an active role in the Zhang Lei route, which depicts the events that took place behind the scenes of this game's Francis route, which is bonus content for Red Spider 2. Please look forward to it.

  • The restaurant where Zhang Lei, Yvet, Francis, The Ghost, and Ding Xiu are at the end of the Francis route is set to be Lok Hau Fook Restaurant (樂口福酒家), a real restaurant in Hong Kong.

Lok Hau Fook Restaurant was used as a filming location for movies such as “The Mission (鎗火) ”and “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In (九龍城寨之圍城)”.

  • At the beginning of the story, the Imaginary Cast for Wong Keung (黃強), who assaults Francis at The Amaryllis Nightclub, is Cheung Wing Cheung (張榮祥), a staff member who frequently appears as an extra in Johnnie To(杜琪峯)'s films.

The Imaginary Cast for Boss Ting's subordinate, who calls Shrewd Lou about the assault, is also Chiu Chi Shing (趙志誠), a staff member who often appears as an extra in Johnnie To's films.

The assumed cast for the Shrewd Lou's subordinate, who is stabbed through the neck with a hairpin by Yvet, is similarly Hung Wai Leung (洪偉良), a staff member who frequently appears as an extra in Johnnie To's films.

  • In the original version, many felt that the mystery surrounding The Ghost's secret was never revealed. To clarify, The Ghost's secret was the covert agreement between Francis and The Ghost, which is disclosed in the Francis route.

In this game, the story proceeds with the premise that this secret agreement existed across all routes.

    • The scene in the Ghost route where Luk and The Ghost are eating ice cream is an homage to “Infernal Affairs II(無間道II)”.
    • The figure on Lai's detective agency desk is designed after a Peking Opera character and is a gift from Yvet. This is because Leon Lai(黎明) and Zhang Ziyi(章子怡) co-starred in “Forever Enthralled(梅蘭芳)”.
